2018’s Sound Surgery Masterclass series kicks off with dubstep/grime ‘king of bass’ Joker, followed by Sam Interface of Jus Now and the sub-heavy sound of the UK Underground. Things are rounded off in the final masterclass by Bristol-grown electronic and D&B legend Om Unit.
Hosted by producer and DJ Kayla Painter at Rough Trade Bristol, artists will give a 360° view of their journey and one-off insights into how they honed their skills.

In the first Sound Surgery Masterclasses, British record producer Liam McLean, better know by his stage name Joker, breaks down dubstep and grime and how he created the subgenre “purple sound”.

Drum and bass producer Sam Interface and well-known Trinidadian percussionist and producer Lazer Beam form the two halves of Jus Now. In this second masterclass they’ll split apart their sound and how they combine Soca rhythms with the sub heavy sound of the UK Underground.

Witness the pioneering producer and DJ Jim Coles, now recognised under the stage name Om Unit, in this final masterclass. Coles will pull apart his years of influence on the global bass music and his approach to searching for sonic tropes to cross-breed and re-imagine his sound.
