Sinkane (Ahmed Gallab) is a Sudanese-American musician who blends krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz and funk rock with Sudanese pop. He is signed to City Slang Records.
Born to college professors in London, he lived in Sudan, then moved to the US when he was five, and lived for some time in Kent, Ohio followed by Columbus, Ohio. Prior to embarking on his solo career, he worked with Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer as a session musician.
Ahmed Gallab is the Band Leader and Music Director of the Atomic Bomb! Band which plays the music of Nigerian Electro-Funk Legend William Onyeabor. The group includes David Byrne (of Talking Heads), Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys), Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz), Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion), Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip), Charles Lloyd, Amadou and Mariam, Jamie Lidell, Pharoah Sanders, Joshua Redman, among many others.
In 2014 bass player Marcel Osborne and saxophonist Andrew Neil Hayes started a weekly jam session, which laid the foundations for what has now become The LBJBs. Taking their name from the host venue, with nod to James Brown’s famously tight band, they pack out the dance floor week in week out with a loving audience who come for one thing – the party! Treating funk classics like jazz standards – to be reworked and improvised upon, they add a wide range of influences from Jimi Hendrix to Pharaoh Sanders and even funkify classic sixties rock flavours.
A conveyor belt of Bristol’s top players passing through the jam session has allowed The LBJBs to pick and choose from the cream of the crop. The result is a super tight unit, who have developed an innate understanding of what it takes to whip the crowd into a sex-funk-frenzy.
