School orchestras are a rare sight within ‘special’ education. Since 2013 OpenUp Music has established six ‘Open School Orchestras’ for young disabled musicians at SEN schools. Three of these orchestras will perform to kick off the inaugural Fast Forward Music Festival:
4.00 – 4.30: Briarwood School Orchestra perform a piece inspired by Thomas Tallis’ Spem In Alium
5.30 – 6.00: Baytree School Orchestra perform a piece based on Beethoven’s 7th Symphony – 2nd movement – Allegretto
7.00 – 7.30: New Siblands School Orchestra perform a reworking of Pachelbel’s Canon
Many of these young disabled musicians will play using music technology specially created by OpenUp Music.
The Fast Forward Music Festival was inspired by last year’s OpenUp Music concert, at which the UK’s first Open School Orchestras performed. Here’s a 20 minute film by Paul Gilbert about the formation of those orchestras, the creation of their instruments, and the final performance:
