They probably didn’t anticipate how Brexit-defying that name would be when they formed the Bristol European Jazz Ensemble back in 2013 as a celebration of the many and various European origins of the band’s original line-up. They’re even more cosmopolitan these days with the inclusion of Canada-raised saxophonist Len Aruliah.

In keeping with the diversity of the musicians their original music is equally globe-trotting in its influences, with tunes inspired by musical ideas and traditions drawn from India, Somalia, Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East as well as the jazz mainstream.

The band are all eager improvisers but their music has a strong emphasis on melody driven by compelling and distinctive rhythms.
