Breakin’ Convention, the international festival of hip hop dance theatre, returns with another line-up of jaw-dropping performances by companies from around the world and around the corner, curated by UK hip hop theatre artist Jonzi D. Local crews share the stage with international hip hop stars and dance crews Antoinette Gomis (France), The Ruggeds (Netherlands), and Iron Skulls (Spain).
Before the main performance, we have a fun packed foyer programmed from 4:30pm. For the first time ever, we are installing Campus Skateparks portable mini ramp on the concourse! Dj Moneyshot will be spinning some tunes and we will be seeing freestyling from local acts, live graffiti from Sepr & 3Dom, also graffiti and breakdancing workshops taking over the foyer in the ultimate celebration of hip-hop culture.
Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions the skateramp has had to be cancelled, all other activity is going ahead
Local acts appearing include Safia White, Jam, Youth Dance Academy, Hype, and Jodelle Douglass.
We have strictly limited workshop spaces with The Ruggeds on Mon 9 May available here. Some breakdancing experience required.
On Tues 10 May, Bristol BBoy Sunni from the Soul Mavericks Crew will be giving a free workshop before the event in Colston Hall Foyer. Sunni is one of the worlds top Bboys, recently winning the UK Bboy championship world champion solo Bboy. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from the best.
Watch this wonderful video about how upcoming Breakin’ Convention dancer Antoinette Gomis takes inspiration from the inimitable Nina Simone.
Antoinette will be performing on the same stage as Nina Simone herself, who graced Colston Hall twice, in 1967 and 1989!
DJ Moneyshot has put together an awesome teaser mix of the ultimate breakin tunes for B-Boys and B-Girls. Have a listen here…
