River Town 2019 highlights so far
Ever since Truckstop Honeymoon rocked the good ol’ ship Tower Belle back in June at our launch party, River Town has flooded Bristol and Bath with some irresistible live roots and Americana music.
From guitar masters Keb’ Mo and Martin Harley to Tex-Mex party starters The Mavericks at Bath Forum, hilarious and heart-warming husband and wife duo Truckstop Honeymoon to old time blues virtuoso ‘Blind Boy’ Paxton, we’ve seen some outstanding performances.
Scroll down to view pictures and watch the video below to get a taste of our highlights so far from this year’s stellar programme of country, blues and roots music.
Rockin’ the boat with Truckstop Honeymoon
With quick whit as sharp and fast as their banjo and guitar plucking, Truckstop Honeymoon kick-started River Town 2019 with their songs of life on the road on Tue 11 Jun.
Dancing the Night Away with The Mavericks
What happens when The Mavericks play their biggest hit as soon as they jump on the stage? Instant Tex-Mex party! Not leaving the audience waiting for long, the Miami four-piece jumped straight into their hit tune ‘Dancing The Night Away’ bringing Bath Forum instantaneously to it’s feet.
Travelling back in time with ‘Blind Boy’ Paxton
We couldn’t wait to bring Jerron ‘Blind Boy’ Paxton back to the south west after he sold out Bristol Folk house back in 2018. And his show at Winston Theatre in River Town on Tue 25 Jun didn’t disappoint for a second. After a brilliant opening set from Josh Okeefe that had all the hallmarks of that Johnny Cash and Hank Williams sound, Paxton showcased his incredible guitar, harmonica, fiddle and banjo playing talent transporting us back to whiskey soaked bars of 1920s.
A double bill of blues guitar masters
Seldom seen performing alone, we were given the rare treat of Martin Harley’s slide guitar blues in a brilliant solo performance at St George’s Bristol on Mon 1 Jul. Wielding heartfelt songs around incendiary lap steel guitar solos in perfect balance, Harley was truly deserved of the standing ovation that brought the first half to a close.
How do follow a performance like that? One of the masters of blues music Keb’ Mo’ had no trouble! Bringing songs old and new to the stage, along with enough guitars and harmonicas for a full band, Keb’s effortless performance oozed charm and style.
There’s more to come from River Town
If you’re hungry for more great country, blues and roots music – look no further! River Town is just getting started and we have another jam-packed four weeks of world-class live music coming up.
Later this month we’ll be treated to global icons Lucinda Williams, k.d lang and Kiefer Sutherland along with alt-country pioneers The Long Ryders, the vintage rock ‘n’ roll sounds of JD McPherson, the witty, moving and seriously catchy songwriting of Robyn Hitchcock and many, many more!
