Great House (with Red Lodge)

Sir John Young built his Great House in the years following the dissolution of the Carmelite Friary on the land where Colston Hall now stands. Elizabeth I established Court in Bristol on a progress to Wales in 1574 and stayed at the Great House as Young’s guest, who received a knighthood in recognition for his services. The Red Lodge located at the top of Lodge Street is the only surviving portion of the estate.
