An Evening of Indian Classical Music
The harp-like delicacy of Kiranpal Singh Deoora’s santoor and the ethereal glide of the sarangi violin, played by Sri Surjeet Singh are two of Indian classical music’s most distinctive sounds. When these two play together they capture the essence of a great musical tradition handed down from one generation of master musician to the next. Presented by the Asian Arts Agency.
SambaSunda Quintet
As world music fusions go SambaSunda’s coming together of the lilting ambience of West Javanese gamelan music with Brazil’s frenetic samba rhythm seemed an unlikely success. But success it certainly has been, with the distinctive acoustic tones of Indonesia gaining urban urgency from that Latin carnival drive and showcasing the remarkable voice and dance moves of singer Rita Tila.
Big Boy Bloater
Do you know what ‘jump blues’ sounds like? Big Boy Bloater does, and his gravel-rinsed vocals and whammy-bar guitar have taken him and his band to the forefront of the UK blues scene. Think early Dr Feelgood with the rough edges left on, think Johnny Guitar Watson going ape, think raw blues with a boogie-woogie kick …
The Adventures of Andy Kershaw
If any one person brought ‘world music’ into mainstream UK radio it must be Andy Kershaw. The former office boy for the great John Peel went on to front programmes for both Radio 1 and Radio 3, while his global pursuit of musical discoveries saw him emerge as a respected foreign correspondent, too. All this and more will be revealed when he revisits some of those adventures tonight.
Moishe's Bagel
In their 8 years Moishe’s Bagel have honed a uniquely polished acoustic sound that also embraces Indian, Arabic and jazz influences, all played with classical clarity and campfire abandon.
Steve Knightley
He’s one of the great names of British acoustic music, whether performing solo or as half of Show Of Hands, but there’s a rocker’s impulse in Steve Knightley’s compelling guitar playing. It’s the everyday truth of the tales he tells that puts him firmly in the great traditions of British folk troubadours, however.
An Acoustic Evening with Blue October's Justin Fu
The voice of Blue October gives a special solo, acoustic performance in Colston Hall's intimate Hall 2 space.
Fay Hield Trio
Hield's beautiful vocals and spine-tingling, traditional ballads have seen her nominated for the Horizon at the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and recieve 'Best Album' in the Roots Critics Poll.
This is the Kit
At the beating heart of This Is The Kit there is the clear-eyed vision of Kate Stables, Paris-based songwriter, banjoista extraordinaire and late of this parish, too. Drawing on the folkish roots of psychedelia, the timeless truths and honest understandings of her songs flower into catchy poppishness thanks to her delicious voice and a cracker of a band.
