This is the tenth joint exhibition for Bristol artists Joan Wilson and Arril Johnson. Joan is showing acrylic paintings from her "Other Skies" series and Arril is exhibiting photographs taken in and around Bristol.

Joan trained as a painter at two American universities before immigrating to the UK with Arril in 1973. She has shown work in a number of group exhibitions in the west country and has had five solo shows. These paintings are part of her Other Skies series. Her paintings take the viewer to other places through the playful use of colour, shape and spatial ambiguities.

Arril studied art and theatre at university and worked as an animator in Montreal before coming to Bristol. He was a freelance animator for many years and now teaches animation at the University of the West of England. Themes running through Arril's photographs are imagining, misperceiving and half-remembering. Sometimes images are montaged, sometimes time is distorted, sometimes the chromatic intensity of a passing moment is recalled through a distancing sepia veil, and sometimes nature creates the illusion.

The artists said: ‘The shape, size, energy and beauty of Bristol has never lost its appeal in our 38 years of living here: Colston Hall, with its new foyer and gallery, reflects that energy and beauty. We are delighted to have our 10th show in the Glass Room.’

Lousie Mitchell, chief executive of Bristol Music Trust which runs Colston Hall, said: “Since coming to Bristol I’ve been impressed with the standard and quality of the artwork that is shown in the Glass Room. It’s another element to the work we do at the Hall and also provides a platform for local artists to show their work to the thousands of people who visit the hall every month.”

The Glass Room is being curated in partnership with Made in Bristol which organises the art and craft fairs at Colston Hall.

There will be a preview event on the 12 January between 6pm-8pm. The exhibition will then be open to the public daily from 13 Jaunuary until 25 February.

The Glass Room will be open from Monday to Friday 8am - 11pm and Saturday 9am-10pm (in quieter times space may close early). On Sundays Colston Hall is open when a show is on.
