The Passion of Joan of Arc - Friday 7th May

EVENT EXPIRED
The Passion of Joan of Arc

A Colston Hall commission

After the critical success of our re-imagining of the silent film He Who Gets Slapped in 2007, once again Colston Hall have commissioned Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) to collaborate and write a new score for Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic 1928 film The Passion Of Joan Of Arc.

Long regarded as a masterpiece of silent cinema that has influenced generations of film makers, the film chronicles Joan’s trial, imprisonment, torture and execution, all told using Joan’s own words taken from trial transcripts discovered in 1924.

In this unique event, the film will be accompanied by a live premiere performance of the new score. Charles Hazlewood will conduct an eclectic group of musicians including Utley and Gregory, six electric guitars, members of the Monteverdi Choir, percussion, horns and keyboards. Incorporating extended techniques for guitar and voice, the new score will provide a powerful and beautiful landscape for this innovative and moving film.

This one-off performance is a unique collaboration between internationally renowned musicians Utley and Gregory, the newly refurbished Colston Hall and Watershed Media Centre, one of the UK’s leading independent cinemas.
