Director John Gibbons
Featuring Robert Hollingworth – Continuo and the Bristol Baroque Soloists
Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 is one of the pivotal works of the Western musical tradition. Its brilliance of invention and orchestration heralded the splendour of the Baroque era and still remains today a work that dazzles and amazes audiences. Its complex nature has meant that many theories have been propounded as to the reasons why Monteverdi wrote the work and the many options open to performers. Robert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini, through their acclaimed performances of Monteverdi and his contemporaries, are now recognised as one of the world’s finest period vocal groups. They have released 19 CDs and 2 DVDs including the world premiere recording of the Striggio 40-part mass which won the Gramophone and Diapason early music awards in 2011.
The soloists of I Fagiolini will be joined by instrumentalists from Bristol Baroque and the Clifton Festival Chorus whose core membership, the Cathedral Choir, have appeared many times on BBC TV and radio. The choral director of the cathedral, John Gibbons, is a conductor with a wide portfolio that includes work with most of the major British orchestras as well as extensive operatic experience. In 2012 he led a much praised performance of the 1610 Vespers in St Albans Abbey with Robert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini as guest soloists.
