Stephen Johnson Insight

This programme mirrors the sources of inspiration drawn on by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.  Prokofiev was profoundly influenced by Haydn in the composition of his ‘Classical’ symphony.  Like Tchaikovsky, Beethoven drew on his admiration for Shakespeare, taking the witches’ scene from Macbeth as inspiration for the slow movement of the ‘Ghost’ piano trio.

Haydn Trio in G minor Hob.XV:19

1. Andante

2. Adagio ma non troppo

3. Presto

Beethoven Trio in D op.70 no.1 ‘Ghost’

1. Allegro vivace e con brio

2. Largo assai ed espressivo

3. Presto
