Slapstick’s Silent Comedy Gala 2015

The Slapstick Festival’s annual Silent Comedy Gala is the laugh-out-loud, ‘must attend, event that makes every January cheerier for audiences of all ages. Always a sell-out, it combines the very best in classic silent screen comedy with live music from an international line-up whose talent for adding vibrancy to film events is in demand all over the world. This year’s our musicians will be accompanying three stand-out films featuring some of the silent era’s best-loved comedians: Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
 
Bristol’s annual Silent Comedy Gala has become the South West’s must-see sellout event each January. It features the very best in classic silent comedy, accompanied live by world class musicians who specialise in peforming at silent cinema screenings around the world.

Writer, actor, director and stand-up comedian Chris Addison (Mock The Week, The Thick of It) is your host for the evening.

Buster Keaton stars in his classic feature “Seven Chances” (1925). The film’s hysterical premise is that Buster discovers he will inherit his grandfather’s $7 Million… but only if he marries by 7pm, today! Now considered one of his finest features ‘Seven Chances’ climaxes in a dramatic scene that sees him darting to avoid a massive avalanche of rocks, in one of cinema’s most memorable sequences. Featuring the World Premiere of Günter A. Buchwald’s score, performed live by members of Bristol Ensemble.

Also showing will be Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comic masterpiece “The Immigrant” (1917) accompanied live by the world-renowned European Silent Screen Virtuosi. Plus Stan & Ollie’s finest tit-for-tat classic, “Big Business” (1929) accompanied by none other than global prog-rock god, grumpy old man and piano virtuoso, Rick Wakeman. This promises to be our finest and funniest gala yet!
