The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, joined by their resident conductor Constantin Silvestri, celebrates the centenary of Colston Hall, which opened its doors on 21 September 1867. A live broadcast in the BBC Home Service, the concert opened with Britten’s ‘Building of the House’, written to commemorate the opening of the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival. Pianist John Ogdon was the soloist in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Simpson’s Piano Concerto. Other works performed include ‘The Pines of Rome’ by Respighi, and Wagner’s ‘Siegfried Idyll’.

The concert was part of a 12-day programme that included a selection of pop, jazz, folk and theatre events, alongside the number of orchestral concerts that featured Colston Hall regulars such as the Hallé Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Bristol Sinfonia.
