Chamber Concert: Shostakovich

Shostakovich Sonata for cello and piano Op. 40
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2 Op. 67

Haunted and haunting, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 enshrines a private valediction and a public outrage at the discoveries as Nazi concentration camps yielded their appalling secrets – horrors undreamt of when, in 1934, against the backdrop of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, he composed the long-limbed Cello Sonata that precedes it.
