Line-up co-presented with Qu Junktions:
Ata Kak, Awesome Tapes From Africa DJ, DJ Katapila
Awesome Tapes From Africa (Brian Shimkovitz) comes to The Lantern with two of his favourite African music specialists for this showcase, one with an incredible story behind it.
In 2002, Brian Shimkovitz bought a tape from a street seller in Ghana. It was Ata Kak’s Obaa Sima (originally recorded in 1993) and so Shimkovitz embarked on a 13 year journey to locate Kak in order to re-release the album, which was eventually re-issued in 2015. FACT Magazine compare Ata Kak’s sound to “Prince’s androgynous Camille alter ego” and added his music had “the raw DIY machine soul of early synthwave pioneers.”
Also joining Ata Kak is DJ Katapila, who’s sound directly descends from Ga musical lineage found around Accra, Ghana with neo-traditional dance music forms of gome, kpanlogo and gyama involved.
