Bristol youth encouraged to make music in new foyer

Youth Music Box brings FREE interactive music making to the Hall

Youth Music - the UK’s largest music charity, which celebrates its 10th birthday this year – is bringing its Youth Music Box to Bristol’s Colston Hall this week. A free interactive music experience, Youth Music Box enables people of any age to create their own music track and video using cutting-edge technology: all in under 10 minutes.

The Box has been developed by music and graphics experts Silent Studios and interactive artist Chris O’Shea. It is a state of the art, cubed structure that visitors can enter, providing an easily accessible musical experience through a mix of real instruments and a “walk-up and play” technology.

Those who step into the box first choose one of six musical styles: reggae, drum and bass, urban, afro beat, classical and disco/electro. After selecting a sample track to keep the beat and play along to, players put their instrumental skills to the test. Four players use Youth Music Box at any one time and have the choice of four instruments: including two keyboards (which control vocals and melody), a drumkit, and a digital turntable, which creates and records the tracks.

Behind the scenes, two technicians in the control room deploy professional video mixing facilities. Inside the Box there are remotely-operated cameras built in, ready to film the creative process. The control room houses a digital audio console which is used to provide a live mix for the participants and to lay down the final track. This is uploaded to www.youthmusic.org.uk where people are then able to view and share their videos.

The Youth Music Box has recently finished its residence at London’s Southbank Centre where 7,300 people of all ages made nearly 2,000 videos.

Opening Times

Youth Music Box, located in the foyer at Colston Hall, will be open from 2-8pm weekdays and 12-8pm at weekends until 18 October.
